Ganesh Chaturthi is not merely a festival — it is a celebration of the birth of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, and his divine grace. Beginning on the Chaturthi tithi of the month of Bhadrapada, this sacred festival is regarded as a symbol of wisdom, prosperity, and the blessing of new beginnings.
According to mythology, while bathing, Goddess Parvati shaped a boy from the paste she used on her body and breathed life into him, making him her son. She instructed him to guard the doorway and not let anyone enter while she bathed.
When Lord Shiva came to see Goddess Parvati, the boy Ganesha stopped him from entering, since he did not recognise him. Enraged by this, Lord Shiva and the boy fought a fierce battle, during which Lord Shiva, in anger, severed the boy's head.
When Goddess Parvati learned that Lord Shiva had killed her son, she was overcome with grief and fury. She demanded that her son be brought back to life, after which Lord Shiva ordered his attendants (ganas) to bring the head of the very first creature they found facing north.
Lord Shiva's attendants first came across a baby elephant. They brought its head, and Lord Shiva placed it on the boy's body, bringing him back to life. In this way, the boy came to have the form of Gajanana — the one with the face of an elephant.
After bringing the boy back to life, Lord Shiva, pleased with him, accepted him as his own son and named him "Ganesha." He also granted him the boon that at the start of any auspicious undertaking, Lord Ganesha would always be worshipped first.
On one occasion, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati set up a contest between Ganesha and Kartikeya to see who could circle the earth first. Kartikeya set off on his vehicle, the peacock, while Ganesha simply circled his own parents, saying that his mother and father contained the entire universe within them.
Devotees install an idol of Lord Ganesha on Ganesh Chaturthi and worship him with devotion for ten days. On Anant Chaturdashi, the idol is immersed in water, symbolising the eternal cycle of arrival and departure in life.
Ganesh Chaturthi teaches us that no strength is greater than wisdom, humility, and devotion to one's parents. Worshipping Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, clears away life's hindrances and paves the way for new beginnings.
May the grace of Lord Ganesha fill your life with wisdom, prosperity, and happiness.
